An eight year old announces that she no longer wants to be a girl, that she is really a boy?

Are children capable of making such a life-changing decision?  Should such a decision be made as one turns into adulthood and is responsible for self?

Will an adult be angry with the parents later, as they may realize that as a child they made the wrong choice?

I don't think that such a dramatic change should be decided, as one is still exploring life as a child. Children move in and out of decisions based on peer pressure. At what point is a child's choice based solely on what they know is best for them?

The baby steps lead to adult choices, that we make after seeing all sides of opportuniites. In adulthood, we follow the decisions that we make. Should a child be considered ready to make a decision based possibly just on emotions?

"Born a girl, the child announced at 18 months, I am a boy"?

Really, 18 months? That sounds more like a parroting of the parent's wishes!
