Ten years ago, the Washington Post interviewed Al Hoffman, WCI Development, now One Hoffman Inc., about his developements in several states. He was getting the awards across the nation for building. He has his close ties with all of the Bush family, so they would frequently show-up at his housing developments built for retirees.
Al Hoffman made a comment about wanting to concrete across the state of Florida even if it meant the death of the panther. Florida has lost the beauty of beaches, citrus groves, crops and clear water in the aquifer. The wild animals are now hunted and trapped, so that the dogs in the yards backing up to the Okkeechobee Lake will not be dragged to the water by the alligators.
The grounds are dry from the drainage on the rivers. The gulf is dirty with pollutants that harbor the algae of the Red Tides killing the fish. The developers keep coming back in for more opportunities to build more walls-of-concrete in the hot sun.
As with all areas of too many houses, the "natives" of nature are squeezed to non-existence. In a time with less of a growth in population and a small increase in the ability to survive, the emphasis should always be on doing with what we have and being happy to see survival for all.
